5-Axis: What You Need To Know:
Advanced Methodologies to Maximize Your Investment

By Ken Corklin
Senior Applications Engineer – Methods Machine Tools

To be effective, Machining in 5-axis requires much more than a post for your CAM system.

Verification:
• Know the parts are right the first time.
• Resolving Interference, from tools, fixtures, and parts.

Optimization
• Going from 3-Axis to 5-axis will not guarantee improved Hard Milling.
• Continuous Linear federates are essential to maximize finish, tool life and cycle time,
• Keeping your cutters in the sweet spot.
• Machine Utilization requires the ability to go from Solid Model to finished part without consuming spindle time and scrapping parts while optimizing your process.

Breaking the “CAM Circle”
• Running repeated circles from the machine, through inspection, engineering and back to the machine is to achieve an acceptable 1st part
